Carmike Movie Theater Adds To The Solid
Reputation of Johnson & Pace
The Carmike Movie Theater in Tyler, Texas had a legal problem on its hands. Drainage from the theater's site was infringing on a neighboring apartment complex's land, carrying with it sediment and other unwelcome deposits. Caught in the middle of a lawsuit, Carmike turned to Johnson & Pace. There, project engineer Jeff Hamilton focused on the site design and improved the drainage system - a solution that left the theater and the apartment complex happy.
For Hamilton, who has also worked with Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview, Texas, the challenges of the site design were just part of a day's work. "I'm able to serve the needs of my clients by responding to the parties directly involved and meeting a compromise - which is what I did with Carmike and the apartment complex," he explains. "We basically had a community meeting to hear concerns involving the lawsuit. We really wanted a high level of involvement so that we could find the best solution to the problem."
Hal Williams, for Carmike, says "Johnson & Pace provided a cost-effective answer for a complicated issue. When Jeff started working on the Tyler theater, we weren't able to predict what the final cost would be, so Johnson & Pace did it cost-plus," he says. "The final outcome was very fair, and it was a very good solution to our legal problem."
Specializing in insight development, grading and client interface, Hamilton brings over 17 years of civil engineering experience. "We always look out for the client's best interest, and we'll let them know if something's not necessary," he says; "We're in it to help them save money."
Williams, for one, was so impressed with Johnson & Pace's economic solution that he hired the firm for a second movie theater project in Lufkin, Texas. "A lot of engineers just put everything that needs to be done on paper, and then they let the client figure out what to do with it," Williams explains. "But Johnson & Pace was able to define our responsibilities and the developer's responsibilities, which made everything a lot more organized. We're already talking with them about our next projects."
